Pretty thought provoking. I’ve always wondered about electrical use increasing resistance. Excellent basics for someone with minimal knowledge, and a desire to learn, like me.

Where did you get the generator? What is the brand and model?

You can use what is called a buck boost regulator. When in boost mod it will raise the voltage while reducing the amperage. When in Buck mod it reduces the voltage and increases the amperage. It is idea for charging batteries because basically you maximize the watt hours that you are getting from your power source. Just google buck boost regulators.

I wonder if the rear wheel could be left on to act as a flywheel? Just drive it with one of the lower gear front sprockets.

What is a sinuswave, a sneeze? You probably mean a sine wave.

How many productive sun hours does your area get in a year? I would bet way less than 50% if you consider night and cloudy days.
It takes more than one method of producing power if you want to be independent. Solar, wind, human, hydro: YOU NEED THEM ALL.

How in the heck do you get 13.8 volts OUT with only 12 volts IN????

Thats damned good info thanks

The average adult male can ‘output’ 100-125 watts with his leg muscles, or roughly 1/8-1/6 of 1 HP. At the ~15V required to charge a 12V battery, that’s 7-8 amperes of current. So it would take exactly as long to charge as charging that same battery with a “normal” charger on the 7A or 8A setting, roughly 30 minutes.

if you left your car lights on all night and flattened the battery, how long would you need to pedal for to get suffiicent power into the battery to start the car again i wonder ?

So a battery in line with the system would condition the volts and watts. Great stuff.

Im A new fan of the site and i am amazed. I have always loved enegry and even made some generators and water pressure powered motors to power a sob pump. I am getting so many new ideas, Thank you both.

Pretty good demonstration that pedal powered electrical generation is very impractical. Batteries need both power and time to charge. I can’t see someone pedaling for a couple hours to charge even a low power battery, like a cell phone. On the other hand, direct bicycle power for short term use for some device, like my sewing machine, can be very practical.

So im looking for overall motor efficiency, internal gear box and reasonable attainable rpm? This is the key attributes to your specific setup?

Car alternators unmodified are a bad choice. The RPMs needed are too high and the rotor needs to be powered (exciter) alternators use electromagnetic field so you need about 65 watts of power to gain full power. Fully charged exciters are very difficult to turn. Car alternators spin 2x the engine RPM so 5k +
Rear wheel pulley slips when a similar load is placed. I have seen on planet green an guy using drill motors with the belt setup. He is producing 15 W this is 100W+

If you use a standard vehicle alternator, wouldnt this eliminate the need for a charge controller? Seeing as an alternator usually peaks voltage at 14.6v?
Also, would leaving the rear wheel on and using a standard serpentine belt rapped around the rear wheel groove(tire and tube removed) and alternator pulley be the better solution, providing you with more gear options?
